Hi all,
I don't need to tell you it's cold these days -- even by Syracuse standards. Unfortunately, when these record low temperatures are sustained, as the forecast predicts, parts of your house are at risk from freezing.
In particular, please be alert for any signs of frozen water pipes. If you notice any faucets that don't run call me immediately. If pipes remain frozen for too long, there's a real chance they could burst and do a lot of damage to the house and to your things in the house.
One of the most vulnerable areas for freezing is always under the kitchen sink. It’s a good idea to leave open the cabinet doors under the sink so warm air can get to the pipes there.
In an emergency, be prepared to shut off the main water valve in your basement. In most cases, it's located near ground level, next to the water meter by the front wall of your basement. Please take a moment to locate this valve and ensure you can get to it in a hurry. Doing so can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and an all-out flood. If you can’t find your water shutoff, call me and I will come show you where it is.
If there are any doors inside the basement in walls that divide the basement, make sure they are open to allow warm air to circulate around water pipes. Notify me if you discover any broken windows in the basement. A blast of cold air from outside can freeze vulnerable pipes very quickly.
With a little luck and diligence, we can get through this cold snap with no frozen pipes. If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to call me.
Stay warm!
